I am reposting Michelle's link to the New Yorker article about the firsr sentence of Albert Camus's novel The Stranger, because it's a little difficult access, being embedded in a comment (for the comment, see the "Additional Reading" section of this website. The article talks about a slightly different set of issues from those we encounter in editing, yet not: what the essay does, above all, is remind us that, and how, words do matter!
