Shufeldt for Tuesday

Hello All,
I am so excited about this collection. I have not marked anything in the letters for you to look at specifically. I am going to provide quite a few transcriptions of random letters. I would like you to look at the art work and make up of the entire collection from the letters to the envelopes. We will be focusing on their relationship and different aspects of that. His writing is a little more difficult to make out, so I don't expect anyone to transcribe an entire letter. If you just have time to read what I have posted and browse the collection, I will be ecstatic. If you do feel like attempting to read some on your own:

March 8 - Letter 3 - topic of "Why Elise" when he has been with so many other women, but she captivates him.
March 7 - Letter 3 - discusses how long it has been since communication and wonders if she still loves him as much as he loves her.
Feb 25 - Letter 3 - writes of what he would do if they broke up in a sense
Feb 5 - Letter 2 - writes of his views on African culture which amount to the men are lazy and that the women have taken on the role of the worker.
Jan. 6 - Letter 1 - tells her that she will only get one love like this in her lifetime and nothing will ever come close to him.
Dec 30th - Letter 1 - talks of their relationship
Dec 29th - Letter 1 - discusses his role and job on the ship.

Now, don't immediately think that this man is a horrible person with the descriptions I have put above. The majority of the letters are adoring and loving in the entirety. Have a great weekend!

PS: Some notes on his writing:
--The symbol that looks like a cursive L is an and symbol
--The word same looks like sauce throughout the letter
--The crosses on the 't's are floating farther along generally (especially in Elise's letter)
Feel free to email me or blog post questions! Magnifying glass may be helpful.
