Front of Letter 1
Words on the ribbon:
"There is a little cherub t to looks out for poor Jack."
[He picks up a monkey which he names Jack later on in his journey. Could be the same one. He writes Elise of Jack occasionally. There is a long letter about Jack when the monkey falls overboard. Mace is quite sad because the ship kept going and let him drown. He does not get a new monkey.]
Words on the banner:
"As slow our ship her foamy track-
Against the wi was clearing
Her trembling p nant still looked back.
To that dear land twas leaving;
So loath to part from all we love;
From all the links that bind us;
So turn our hearts as on we rove.
To those we've left behind."
Excerpts from March 4th
".....one realizes
how deeply the sense of exile in
each meditation moment in the
vastness of moonlit sea about
him and grand expanse of God's
starlit space above......"
".....The sea--the vast, trembling, glittering
sea -- flashes back in each wave the
two thousand soft lights from a cloudless
starlit sky_ it's indescribable space
impresses one with such a sense of
majesty & of strength that as
you lean back in your chair to
watch the curling smoke arise - you
can but feel the presence, in
everything about you, of that Great
Being who holds it all in the
hollow of His Hands. Alone! Alone!..."
The make-up of the Envelopes
They are a mod podge of lined writing paper, plain thin paper, and thikc cardstock that have been glued and folded into beautiful patterns. It is thick on the edges to protect the letter, but thin where the address is written. He writes in beautiful calligraphy on the front of them. These are even apart of the artistic piece he prepares for her.
He's quite the poet, as well as a craftsman, right? A multi-talent that, had I been Elise, would certainly have induced me to overlook his drinking (if the rumor was even true). I also like your sense of humor, as evidenced by the cocise observation that he "did not get a new monkey." Very nice.
